The List

I am not sure about all of the cities yet, but here is the list of States I'll be passing through in chronological order:

Maryland (Obama)
Pennsylvania (Leaning toward Obama)
Ohio (Tossup)
Indiana (Leaning toward McCain)
Illinois (Obama)
Missouri (Tossup)
Kansas (McCain)
Oklahoma (McCain)
New Mexico (Leaning toward Obama)
Arizona (McCain)
California (Obama)

(state standing in the polls given according to http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/10/electoral.map/index.html)

I think that if you look at a map of the political territories I'll be getting a pretty good mix of supporters and undecideds from both of the major parties.

Now! I have so many little odds and ends to tidy up before the trip. I'll post more of interest when there's more to tell.

Missouri is pretty much McCain; it probably won't be a big factor down the stretch. In fact, states like Indiana and Virginia are more volatile this year.

The best site for this stuff is the (left-leaning) regression master, FiveThirtyEight.com.

I like how you can almost always tell a website's political bent by the banner adds that pop-up when you log on.

So you are going through Illinois! Although Illinois is a Blue state and nuts for Obama, I believe that Cook county, home of Chicago, is the only county that is over 60% democratic. The massive urban population overpowers the conservative voters of the south and the suburbs. Check out this map from the last presidential election.

As Illinoisans, Ryan and I have commented on the fact that below Highway 80 the state is completely conservative and how crazy it is that a city can pretty much carry a state. It doesn't really matter, I just thought it was interesting, and that you will probably run into contradictions like that throughout the country. I'm looking forward to what you find in Illinois (and throughout the country!)
Buen viaje y cuĂdate.
